- 4-6 cups ice small cubes or crushed works best
- 1-2 tbsp coarse salt ice cream salt, kosher salt, or coarse salt
- 1 cup juice or soda do not use diet or zero-sugar options
Open a large quart-sized plastic bag. Pour in the ice and sprinkle the coarse salt directly over the ice cubes. Give it a quick shake to distribute the salt.
Carefully pour the juice or soda into a smaller sandwich-sized bag. Squeeze out as much excess air as possible and seal the bag completely shut. Double-check the seal!
Place the sealed juice bag directly inside the larger bag, nestling it into the salty ice mixture. Seal the larger ice bag completely shut.
Wrap a thick kitchen towel around the bag (or wear winter gloves) to protect your hands from the extreme cold. Shake the bags vigorously for 3 to 5 minutes, massaging the ice around the inner bag.
Pull the smaller bag out and inspect the texture. If it's a thick, frosty slushie, carefully open the inner bag and pour your treat into a chilled glass. (If it is too watery, put it back and shake for another 1-2 minutes).
Seal check: Make absolutely sure the inner bag is sealed tightly before shaking. If salt water leaks in, your slushie is ruined! Sugar matters: Always choose a beverage containing real sugar. Diet or zero-sugar drinks will freeze into a solid brick instead of a soft slushie. Keyword No Blender, Slushie, Summer Treat
